This website was created by researchers at the University of Washington’s Global Cardiovascular Health Program and the Rural PRO-CARE team. Our team is working to improve cardiovascular health locally in the western United States, and globally with collaborators in other countries.
What is reciprocal innovation?

We believe health researchers and healthcare providers around the world can learn from one another. Sharing ideas can help us all provide better health services to the patients and communities who need them. This is known as reciprocal innovation.
This website is intended as a toolkit for researchers and their collaborators who want to find, adapt, implement, and study evidence-based practices in primary care settings. We provide a guide to planning research and examples from our and others’ work. We are indebted to the work of Global to Local, an organization that brought global ideas to local settings in King County, Washington, United States, from 2010-2024. Their 2021 “Global Learning for U.S. Primary Care” is a helpful resource for this work, and provided inspiration to our team.
For those new to reciprocal innovation, we suggest starting here:
Reciprocal Innovation Process
For those who wish to design a global-to-local implementation research study, we provide a step-by-step process for you to follow.

Looking for examples? See global-to-local research in action with a demonstration from ADOPT-HF, the adaption of a digital optimization toolkit for heart failure from urban settings in the United States and Brazil to the rural United States. As you explore the global-to-local process steps, examples from the ADOPT-HF project are provided to illustrate reciprocal innovation. The ADOPT-HF project is currently in the implementation phase. As the project develops, more examples will be added to this website.
